A Rugby Kind of Weekend
June 2, 2018 was a big day in Washington, DC–Wales vs. South Africa in a rugby match unlike one the US has ever seen. I invited rugby friends for the occasion and we had a great time! The match was at RFK stadium, which had definitely seen better days, but we didn’t let that affect us.
Mike joined us three rugby players for the match and enjoyed hearing all about how to play the sport 🙂 We got a babysitter for Caroline because this was no place for a tiny girl! Who only knows the kind of foul language she could pick up here??
All of the DC area rugby aficionados came out in full force and it was great to see some of our favorites from the glory days of playing.
The match itself was fantastic. It was close the whole time and there wasn’t too much kicking–sometimes that can take away from the most amazing part of the game, in my opinion–watching these amazing athletes shoot the gaps and spin the ball out wide!
After the match, we headed to a big parking lot and met up with so many people we’ve played with before–it was like 2004 all over again, only a few of us were a wee bit older, had children, and were no longer tackling the crap out of each other on Saturday mornings and singing together in pubs on Saturday nights…of course, some were still doing that, and props to them!
Cheers to international rugby making a splash in DC!
